Simon E Lewis, whose death occurred last Wednesday, April 17, in the State Hospital at Cherokee, from heart failure, was born in York State March 28, 1834, having arrived at the age of 73 years and 19 days.

He was one of Monona County’s pioneer settlers, having lived in the vicinity of Mapleton for a great many years, and it was here on January 5, 1869, that he was united in marriage to Miss Bridget Muckey.

Mr. Lewis served as a private in the Union ranks during the Civil war and was honorable discharged.

He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn the loss of a dear husband and father, Mrs. Charles Garner, of Klethsburg, Ill., Mrs. Sam Allison, Wrightstown, Wis., George Lewis, South Shore, S. Dak., Mrs. Henry Smythe, Sioux City, Iowa: Ira Lewis, Mapleton, Ia.: Mrs. Thom. Newkirk, Mapleton, Ia.: Mrs. Henry Hamilton, Rodney, Ia.
