THE CHELAN LEADER Newspaper 5 Feb 1902, Chelan, Chelan Co., Washington

Hon. Daniel Campbell

Died, on Monday night, at his residence four miles north of Chelan, Daniel Campbell, aged 79 years. Mr. Campbell, during several years residence in this section has made many warm friends who will sorrow because of his sudden call to the beyond, and the bereaved widow and children have the sympathy of the community. The following obituary has been handed us for publication by one who had known the deceased for many years.
Our esteemed friend and neighbor, Hon. Daniel Campbell, bade his family and numerous friends a last good night at 10:30pm Feb. 3rd. We are not advised at this writing of the immediate cause of death, but old age was undoubtedly the chief factor in his removal from among us.
He was born in Ashland Co., Ohio (typers note: should say Richland Co. since Ashland Co. did not start until 1846) of the sturdy Caledonian ancestry whose name he bears, and moved to Knox County, ILL, in 1861. In 1863 he removed from there to Mr. Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa, and successfully installed and operated one of the first cheese factories and dairies ever introduced into southeastern Iowa. In 1879, Mr. Campbell moved still further west, to Monona county, Iowa, and became a farmer of the far famed Missouri bottom, at that time largely under water. About 12 years ago a son, Judge C. C. Campbell, of Sioux City, attracted by the genial beauty of Chelan, came here to settle, and on the elder gentleman making a visit to Chelan he also was struck by the many advantages the country offered, and he, too, made his home here and devoted himself to fruit farming.
Mr. Campbell has left a large and widely scattered family to mourn his loss, seven sons and two daughters, M. R. Campbell, Osceola, Iowa; P.F. Campbell, Custer county, Neb.; E. P. Campbell, Eureka, Cal., Mrs. Mary Edmunds, La Harpe, Ill.; C.C., Howard and Sam M. Campbell, Chelan; L. C. Campbell, Sioux Falls, Iowa and Katherine Alice Lotapiech, Nonpareil, Neb., deceased.
The remains will be taken to Mr. Pleasant, Iowa for interment. Mr. Campbell was a Knight Templar, a life-long democrat, both in character and polities; was a profound and advanced thinker, always eager and active for the uplifting of hummanity; served as representative for the 9th district, and was unanimously chosen by the greenbackers as their candidate for governor of Iowa (typer note: probably 9th District Iowa and the election for governor was in 1879), and although defeated, ran immensely ahead of the ticket. The strong rugged, fearless, honest and capable eloquence aond unanserable logic of "Honest Dan," as Iowans loved to call him, has had such an influence in Monona county and the adjacent country that a few more such men could evidently have changed the political attitude of the Hawkeye state. Senators Allison and Yeomans of the interstate commission used often to call upon "Honest Dan," to avail themselves of the extraordinay wisdom and knowledge of affairs possessed by our lamented friend. In the beatiful poem of "Abou Ben Adhem," that worthy is described as being interviewed by the recording angel as to his qualifications for eternal bliss. Said Abou: "You may write me down as one who loves his fellowmen." "Honest Dan" Campbell is in that class, and when the lists are opened of those who truly love the Lord his name like Abou Ben Adhem will head the scroll.

Pupil.
