C. L. “Tory Outhouse, 78, Moorhead, Iowa, died April 30, 1979 at Burgess Memorial Hospital, Onawa, Iowa, where he had been a patient for five days.
Mr. Outhouse was born September 4, 1900, the son of O. M. and Minnie Struble Outhouse. He was the first baby to be born in the new town of Moorhead. He attended the public schools of Moorhead and later served in the U.S. Navy for two years during World War I.
On October 7, 1935 he was married to Anne Hanson in the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
In January 1938 Tory and Anne purchased the grocery department of Shea and Co. They have continued to operate the Red and White Store to the present time. In 1976 the merchants of Moorhead presented them with an award of recognition for 44 years of faithful service to the community.
Tory was a member of the American Legion, and was affiliated with the First Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; a brother, Kenneth of Desert Hot Springs, California; a sister, Mrs. Beulah Vinson of Council Bluffs; three nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wayne.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 1979, at the First Christian Church at Moorhead with Rev. M. Dwight Walker officiating. Mrs. Charles Kratz, the organist, played the selection, “The Old Rugged Cross”.
Bearers were John Moorhead, George Moorhead, Don Solberg, Howard McWilliams, Juhl Hansen and Virgil Johnson.
Interment was in Spring Valley Cemetery at Moorhead, Iowa with Military Service by Peter A. Hansen American Legion Post No. 365, of Moorhead, Loyle Kratz, Commander.
Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa.
