Peter C. Knutson Called To Rest ~ 1953

Peter C. Knutson, 78, one of the oldest native residents of the Soldier community, died at 12:40 Sunday morning, Mary 24, only eight hours after he had been taken to the Onawa hospital. He had been ill for three months, being cared for constantly most of that time by his wife after it was found that nothing could be done to prolong his by keeping him against his will in the hospital.
Mr. Knutson was born in a sod house just across the road west of the Basil Gibbs farm, a quarter of a century before the town of Soldier existed
He took an active part in community affairs, serving as trustee for many years, and also serving a president of the Soldier board of education at the time the new school was built here in 1916.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 27 with a short service at the home southwest of Soldier at 1:30 and at the Soldier Lutheran south church at 2:00. Pastor John Kilde gave the sermon. Burial was in Soldier Valley cemetery under the direction of the Oldham Funeral Home.
Peter Cornelius Knutson, son of Thrond and Guri Knutson, was born February 2, 1875 in a sod house three miles southeast of Soldier. He passed away at the Onawa hospital after a three months illness at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 22 days.
His entire life was spent in the Soldier community were(sic) he tilled the soil, first as a farm hand and later on his own place southwest of Soldier where he spent his last years. He was baptized and confirmed in the Soldier Lutheran Church in 1890 and remained steadfast to that faith all his life.
On February 24, 1902 he was united in marriage to Henrietta Henriksen at Onawa, Iowa. To this union six children were born, one daughter, Mary Francis, dying in infancy.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Genevieve (Mrs. Wilton McDole) of Dunlap, LaVonne (Mrs. John Wade) of Soldier; three sons, Glen of Kewanee, Illinois, Parke, a patient at the veterans hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., and Wyland of Soldier; one sister, Mrs. Mary Ellison of Vermillion, S. D.; two brothers, Louis of Soldier and Charley of Bashaw, Alberta, Canada; six grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
