ROLAND HANSON FUNERAL MONDAY ~ 1924

The remains of Roland Hanson arrived in Soldier Saturday night via Turin. The body was sent via Wall Lake and in order to reach Soldier before Monday, had to be sent to Turin.

Roland Philip Hanson, son of Anton Hanson was born in Soldier, Aug. 29, 1895, and met his death from burns following an explosion on board the U.S.S. Trenton last Monday, Oct. 20, 1924.

The deceased was a member of the Lutheran church, having been confirmed June 5, 1910. Also a member of Elk Lodge No. 586 A.F. & A.M., Sioux City Consistory No. 5 and the Soldier Valley Post, American Legion.

He was a graduate of the Soldier H.S. May 20, 1913, and attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn.

The deceased enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1916 and was honorably discharged after four active years of service in 1920. He re-enlisted April 1, 1924, remaining until the hours of his death.

He was preceded in death by his mother. His father, two sister and four brothers mourn him. Mrs. D. F. Erickson and William of Odebolt(ripped) (Harold) and Herman of Soldier and Walter of Frazee, Minn.

In addition to the immediate family, a lodge of sorrow with the American Legion mingle their tears with those of the family. A community is stricken at the loss of a fellow citizen of whom they may feel justly proud and mourn today as one family.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 27th and the remains of our sailor boy wwere laid to rest on National Navy day. The services were conducted by Rev. H. K. Sunner and Rev. C. B. Whitehead, the American Legion and the Masons. Rev. Whitehead was superintendent of the Soldier schools at the time Roland graduated. This was one of the largest funerals ever held in Soldier.
