Thomas Cover was born in Keokuk county, in eastern Iowa. He came to the Willow (Monona County) and met and married the daughter of a prominent farmer, Edwin J. Hull. Tom and Augusta returned to Keokuk County and lived in Sigourney and What Cheer. There they had a family of six children, five boys and one girl: Irving, Cora, George, Guy, Frank and Leo.
The family moved back to the Willow in 1877 and the family engaged in general stockraising. Both George and Leo married local Dunlap girls. George married Mina Lantz, a cousin of Leland Lantz and Leo married Marie Dally, whose family operated the Dally Hardware Store in Dunlap for many years. George is the only child that remained in the local area. He has many grandchildren and great grandchildren scattered around the United States. When the children were grown Tom and Augusta moved to Dunlap where they lived until their deaths. They are buried in the Dunlap Cemetery along with their son, Guy, who died at an early age.
The original Cover School (Willow Twp, Monona County) was built in 1874. The first teacher was Miss Eliza Bailey, a cousin of the Covers. She also is buried in the Dunlap Cemetery.
