Biography of Jacob Hittle of Kennebec Township

Jacob Hittle was born in Green County Ohio June 6, 1820. He was the seventh child of Michael Hittle Senior and Lydia (Yeaple) Hittle, the grandson of Revolutionary War veteran Michael Hittel of Columbia County, Pennsylvania, and the great grandson of Jurgen Michael Hittel of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, a native of Germany and a veteran of the French And Indian War.

Jacob Hittle moved as an infant with his parents Michael Hittle Senior and Lydia Yeaple Hittle from Ohio to Rush County, Indiana in 1824. He married Miss Huldah Jane Ambers at Rush County on June 1, 1840. Mr. and Mrs. Hittle came to the town of Lovilia, Monroe County, Iowa between 1846-1848 where Mr. Hittle practiced his trade of carpentry.

On September 7, 1862 Mr. Hittle enlisted as Corporal in Company A, Thirty-Sixth Iowa Infantry, along with his son Michael. Mr. Hittle was in all of the campaigns and battles of the Thirty-Sixth Iowa except Mark's Mills, when he had been left behind sick, in garrison at Camden, Arkansas. Mr. Hittle did participate in the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry a week later, on April 30, 1864 as a member of the 7th Army Corps Casual Detachment. After being mustered out of the service at DuVall's Bluff, Arkansas on August 24, 1865 along with his son Michael, Mr. Hittle returned to Monroe County. Of the nine children of Jacob and Huldah Hittle, five were raised to maturity: Michael Hittle of Monona County, Philip Hartsell ("Harts") Hittle also of Monona County, George Levago Hittle, also of Monona County, Sarah Anne Hittle Ross, Mary Survila Hittle Egbert and Silas M. Hittle.

In 1885, Jacob Hittle and his wife came to live with their son and daughter-in-law Michael and Deborah Hittle on the latter's 306 acre holding in Kennebec Township. Mr. Hittle was a member of the GAR Post at Castana, along with his son Michael. Mr. Hittle died at Castana on February 15, 1905. Mr. Jacob Hittle is buried in the Hittle Family plot at Grant's Cemetary near Ticonic.
