Fred S. Woodward, died at St. Ansgar, Io., April 12th, 1877. Mr. Woodward settled in Pickerel Lake in 1857, and although he was not so extensively known through the county as many old settlers, he was highly respected by his immediate neighbors, who knew him best.
When the Rebellion culminated in the firing upon Fort Sumpter, he was among the first in the county to enroll his name as a volunteer in Company F, 4th Regiment Minnesota Volunteers. He was a good soldier, beloved by his comrades, and his memory will always have a warm place in the hearts of those with whom he fought.
Although he was not a resident of the county at the time of his death, we cheerfully give him a place in our obituaries.
~Freeborn County Standard, Albert Lea, MN; June 21, 1877
Note: Burial is in the St. Ansgar City cemetery
