On Friday, May 24th, at 2 o'clock P.M., our friend and fellow townsman, J.L. Grover, departed this life for a better, leaving a wife and four children to mourn the loss of a dearly loved husband and father.

This seems a peculiarly sad affliction to the family. She having but recently been called up to mourn the death of her mother and later, receiving the announcement of the death of his mother.

Mr. Grover has been a resident of Rock these fourteen years, and was very highly respected and esteemed by all, and his death creates a void in more than the family circle.

His remains were taken to the Baptist church in Mitchell, Sunday, followed by a long procession of friends and neighbors, where Prof Bush preached the funeral sermon. He was interred in Oak Grove cemetery by the side of a daughter buried some years since.

Mrs. Grover and family have the sincere sympathy of all this community in this their great bereavement.

It is with feelings of sadness that we record the death of J.L. Grover, of Rock township, who died on Friday afternoon, May 24, 1878, after a long and painful illness.

Mr. Grover was never very rugged, and for several years has been subject to painful attacks of disease in the chest and stomach, from which he suffered excruciating pain. Last fall he had one of these attacks, which was of more than usual acuteness, and which completely prostrated him, but with the beginning of winter he seemed to rally for a time, until in February when it took another turn, and he rapidly grew worse. Physicians were called, medicines and delicacies prepared, and everything which willing hands and loving hearts could suggest was done to alleviate pain and bring a return of health.

Nothing seemed to give anything more than temporary relief, however, and about one month ago he was compelled to take to his bed permanently, since which time his strength and life fled rapidly until Friday last, when he died, peacefully and quietly, surrounded by his immediate family and such of the neighbors as were enabled to be there.

Mr. Grover was one of the pioneers of Rock township, and was a man highly beloved and respected by all with whom he came in contact. He was thoroughly honest and upright in all his dealings and leaves a name and reputation untarnished.

He leaves a loving wife and four bright children to mourn him, but they have one consolling thought, at least, they need never blush for aught their father has ever done. We extend to the afflicted family our heartfelt sympathy in their hour of affliction.

Mr. Grover was born in Chateauga, N.Y., from which place he removed to Madison, Wis., and thence to Rock township, where he has resided fourteen years. He was in his 47th year when he died.

The funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Mitchell, Rev. Alva Bush, of Osage, preaching the sermon to a large and sympathizing audience.

We wish to return our heartfelt thanks to relatives and friends, and especially to the Grange, for the kindness and sympathy extended to us throughout the sickness of our late lamented husband and father. Their acts will always remain green in memory, and cherished amid all life's changes.
