Sylvia M. (Adams) Mayer, age 95, of Stacyville, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family will not be having public services at this time. A private family graveside service will be held at the Visitation Catholic Cemetery Cemetery with Father Raymond Burkle officiating.

Sylvia was born November 3, 1924, at Stacyville, Iowa, the daughter of Mary M. (Wingert) and Ben Adams, Jr. She graduated from Visitation Catholic High School in 1943. On September 24, 1947, she married Jerome Mayer at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville.

Over the years, she worked at various places, with Wagner Insurance in Stacyville being her last place of employment. She also babysat in her home for great-nieces and nephews and others for many years. Sylvia was a member of Visitation Christian Women, the Stacyville American Legion Auxiliary, and was a familiar face serving snacks at the Bloodmobiles. Sylvia enjoyed traveling with her husband, Jerry, to his Army buddies’ reunions. Her home was always open for overnight visits of friends and relatives.

Sylvia is survived by sister-in-law, Anita Adams of Stacyville; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry Mayer in 1991; her son, Ronald “Ron” Mayer; brothers: Jerome Adams, Charles Adams and Willard “Jim” Adams; and sisters, Mildred Schaefer and Virginia Weber.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Stacyville Community Nursing Home.
