Irene Martha (Nicholson) Koster

November 23, 1926 - September 30, 2018

Irene Martha (Nicholson) Koster passed away September 30, 2018. She was born November 23, 1926 to Elmer and Elsie (Krueger) Nicholson.

She graduated high school from Grafton. She attended Cedar Falls but before graduating taught country school. She received her BA degree from Cedar Falls and went on to receive her Master's Degree from Upper Iowa. She pursued her education at Bemidji State College and was just short of receiving her PhD.

She married Delmer Koster on October 18, 1946. To this union, three children were born: Patricia Jo, Pamela Sue, and Peggy Ann.

She taught Sunday school for many years and became Superintendent of Sunday School and Bible school at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. She taught school in Mitchell for many years before teaching in Osage. After furthering her education, she became a Learning Disabilities Coordinator for the Area Education Agency in Clear Lake. She touched many lives and loved children. She served as President of the Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher's Association, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Chat and Stitch Club in St. Ansgar. After moving to Osage, she became a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Rachel's Circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Elmer and Elsie Nicholson), two brothers (Duane and Bruce Nicholson), her husband (Delmer), her daughter (Patricia Somdahl) and followed in death by her brother-in-law, Ted Clikeman.

She is survived by her sister, Darlene Clikeman; her daughters (Pam Fossey of Arvada, Colorado), (Peggy Funk of Mason City); five grandchildren (Robyn Fossey and son, Bennett; Hollie Fossey and son, Reilly; Lucas (Jen) Funk and son, Kasen; Hilary (Nathan) Frerich and daughters, Abigail and Madison; Samantha (Michael) Enright; sister-in-law, Lanita Koster; sister-in-law, Neva Angel, and nieces and nephews.

Service will be on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Christopher Staley officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery. Schroeder & Sites Fuenral Home of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.
