John J. Sullivan, age 81, of New Haven, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 3, 2018, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, Iowa, with Father Jerry Kopacek officiating. There will be military honors by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation with the body present will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 2:00 p.m. Following the funeral service, cremation will take place with inurnment at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Haven.

John was born May 30, 1937, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Harold and Marie (Schweiger) Sullivan. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in New Haven in 1955. John served in the U.S. Army.

On November 16, 1963, he married Carol May at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, Minnesota. They lived their entire married life on their farm near New Haven. John was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Osage American Legion, and was active in the Democratic party. He enjoyed his family, farming, and playing cards. John especially enjoyed helping out at his grandchildren’s schools and having lunch with them while he was there.

John is survived by his wife, Carol Sullivan of New Haven; his children, Lisa (Keith) Cockrum of Osage, Terry (Becky) Sullivan of West Linn, Oregon, Deb (Darin) Erdmann of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Dawn (Tedd) Kruse of Collierville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Ross Cockrum, Joe (Courtney) Cockrum, Marcus Erdmann, Ethan Erdmann, Jack Kruse, Ava Sullivan, and John Sullivan; sisters, Dorothy Owen of Monterey, California, and Mary Clausen of Des Moines; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Helen Sullivan, Marilyn Sullivan, Bob (Audrey) May, Rita (Dan) McCoy, Ann Wolf, Gerard (Janet) May, Eddie (Teresa) May, Pam (Richard) Fox, Mark (Rose) May, and Cathy (Dan) Moellenbeck; cousin, Ann Sullivan of Rockford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bernard and Regina May; his granddaughter, Maddie Kruse in 2015; brothers, Mark Sullivan, Jerald Sullivan, and Keith Sullivan; and brothers-in-law, Dr. Bill Owen, John May, and Tom Wolf.
