Died February 27, 2017

Lester D. “Les” Benttine, age 82, of Osage, died Monday, February 27, 2017, at his home in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Pastor Alan Schulz officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery with a flag presentation by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Les was born September 30, 1934, in rural Worth County, Iowa, the son of Carl and Alice (Thompson) Benttine. He graduated in 1953 from Little Cedar High School. Les served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

On April 15, 1961, he married Janice M. Smith at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa, Iowa. Les worked for Osage Motor Supply and CarQuest Auto Parts, both in Osage, for 36 and a half years. He also worked part time for Osage Liquor, Farmer’s Feed and Grain in Riceville, and City Motor Parts in Charles City. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was a life member of the Osage V.F.W. Les enjoyed gardening and camping.

Les is survived by his wife, Janice Benttine of Osage; his son, Wayne Carl Benttine of Riceville; his daughter, Cynthia Ehrhart of Osage; step-grandchildren, Andrew Ehrhart and his son, Ares Ehrhart, of Columbus, Wisconsin, Nicholas Ehrhart and Jordan Ehrhart, both of Deerfield, Wisconsin; brothers, LeRoy “Doc” (Joanne) Benttine of St. Ansgar, and Donald (Marianne) Benttine of Mesa, Arizona; mother-in-law, Martha Smith of Phoenix, Arizona; brother-in-law, Dennis Smith of Phoenix, Arizona; goddaughter and niece, Connie Benttine Wagner of Osage, and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clayton Benttine; nephew, Dennis Benttine; father-in-law, Loren Smith; son-in-law, Chris Ehrhart; and brother-in-law, Gary Smith.
