MRS. BERIT ISTAD
OLD-TIME RESIDENT
DIES AT OSAGEMrs. Berit Istad, 81, passed away Sunday, July 25, 1943, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thora Moore, after an illness that extended over several weeks. She was a long-time resident of the Orchard community and had a wide acquaintance.
Deceased was the daughter of Nelson Robole and Thora Hagen. She was born at Ostre Slidre, Valdres, Norway, October 6, 1861. She was reared in the Lutheran faith in her native land.
In 1892 she came to America. After a few months, with her husband, Gulbrand Istad and their infant daughter, she located on the farm near Orchard, which was to be her home for the remainder of her life, 51 years.
Mrs. Istad survived her husband by 14 years. Her daughter, Mrs. Claude Newman, lived with her. Mrs. Istad enjoyed good health until mid-winter of this year. After several weeks of illness she rallied with the coming of spring. However, she suffered a relapse and had been failing for some time. The last few weeks she spent with her daughter, Mrs. Moore, in Osage. Two weeks before her death she suffered a stroke of paralysis.
Besides the daughter mentioned, she is survived by two sisters in Norway -- Kari, who resides in Oslo, and Annie, in the country near that city. She is also survived by four grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Mrs. Don McMurchy of Floyd; Bernard Moore, S 1c; Mrs. Lorin Klemesrud; Lloyal Moore, Osage, and Robert Dean McMurchy, Floyd.
She leaves an example of devout Christian motherhood as her heritage to her children, and children's children.
Funeral services were held at the Champion funeral home July 27, and at the Osage Lutheran church. Interment was in the Osage cemetery**.
Friends from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Martin Willinger, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Horgan and Mrs. Mable Rustad of Lyle; and Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Clapper of Clear Lake.
