Melvin R. Gerbig, age 86, of Osage, died Monday, April 27, 2015, at the Faith Home in Osage.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery with a flag presentation by Stacyville American Legion Post 569 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 4:30 p.m.
Melvin was born October 21, 1928, at Stacyville, Iowa, the son of Roy and Mary (Adams) Gerbig. He graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1946. Melvin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany for two years. He was a farmer for a few years, worked at the Stacyville Lumber Company for a number of years, and then was a self-employed carpenter. He retired in 1993.
Melvin was united in marriage on May 12, 1979, to Dorothy Adams Lievrouw at the Congregational Church in Orchard. The couple made their home in Osage. He was a member of the Stacyville American Legion, Osage V.F.W. and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Melvin always enjoyed a good game of 500 and cribbage. He loved gardening and watching his many ball games on television. Camping, fishing, woodworking, and decorating for Christmas were also on the top of the list of activities he enjoyed.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jean Gerbig of Osage; his children, Sheila (Pat) Hennessey of Osage, Linda Abben of Charles City, Doreen (Tracy) Klemesrud of Kennewick, Washington, Ken (Joann) Gerbig of Mason City, Rod (Elaine) Gerbig of Stacyville, Karen Bremer (friend, Ken Nelson) of St. Ansgar, John (Steph) Gerbig of Stacyville, and Pam (Glen) Williams of Stacyville; step-children, Tim Lievrouw of Albert Lea, Minnesota, David (Claire) Lievrouw of West Allis, Wisconsin, Doreen (George) Neidermayer of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Dennis (Susan) Lievrouw of Germantown, Wisconsin; 21 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanine Kockler of Hanlontown; brother, Lloyd (Esther) Gerbig of Osage; and former wife, Jane Ulven Gerbig.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rosemary Ellis; and brother, Lenard Gerbig.
