Herman Clifford Paulson was born August 17, 1900 at rural Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa, to Gjert Knutsen Paulson and Anna Tormodsdatter Dordahl, the youngest of their five children. He had four full siblings and three half-siblings.

Herman married Claudia Lorraine Brewer on September 26, 1939 at Albert Lea, Minnesota. The couple had two children.

Herman C. Paulson died July 28, 1956 at Nora Springs, Floyd, Iowa, and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
