Robert Anton Slaughter, age 73, of New Haven, died Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of Lewy Body Dementia.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2014, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven with Rev. Steve Garner officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Haven with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Bob was born April 18, 1941, in New Richmond, Wisconsin, the son of Robert F. and Olga (Shern) Slaughter. At the age of six, Bob moved with his family to New Haven. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in New Haven in 1959. He attended Iowa State University for three years before joining the United States Navy. Bob was in the Polaris Submarine Service as a fire control tech aboard the SBN 608 Ethan Allan. Two years of his life were spent under water. Bob served a total of seven years, seven months, and three days.

On October 30, 1965, Bob was united in marriage to Judith Utz at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Taneytown, Maryland. In 1970, Bob returned to Iowa to farm with his father. Bob’s greatest loves, besides his family, were being a farmer and pulling his tractor. He served on the Mitchell County Conservation Board, the FHMA Board, the Mitchell County Zoning Board, the Osage School Board, and the Farm Credit Services of America Board of Directors in Omaha, Nebraska, serving as chairman of the board for two years.

Bob was a 4-H leader and was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven, where he was on the church council and was a CCD teacher. Bob was a very kind-hearted and caring person. He could always bring a smile to people’s faces.

Bob is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judy Slaughter of New Haven; his son, Erik Slaughter and his sons, Brett and Dalton of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his daughter, Jennifer (Dustin) Stewart and their son, Kaiden of Byron, Minnesota; his brother-in-law, John (Marilee) Miller of St. Paul, Minnesota; his niece, Linda Miller of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota; his nephew, John (Laurie) Miller and daughters, Alyssa and Aubrey Miller, all of Plymouth, Minnesota; his uncle, John Slaughter of Oakdale, Minnesota; his aunt, Josephine McGraw of Phoenix, Arizona; many cousins, friends, and his German Shepherd, Rupert.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Gladys Miller.
