Carl Olsen Knudsen was bor​​n November 28, 1879 at rural Floyd County,​ ​Iowa to Ole Knudsen an​d ​Kari Olsdatter, the oldest of their eleven children. Carl was baptized on February 8, 1880, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa, and confirmed at same on June 13, 1897.
