Gunhild Johnson was born October 11, 1860 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Ole Helgesen Johnson and Berthe Jensdatter, the first of their ten children. Her sister was also named Gunhild Bertine Johnson, the 2nd Gunhild being born April 7, 1867, a year after her older sister's death.

Gunhild Johnson died September 15, 1866 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the newly formed Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. Hers was one of the earliest burials at the cemetery.
