Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4 at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, 207 South School Street, St. Ansgar, Iowa and also one hour prior to the service on Sunday.

Rebecca (Bec) Ann Hegland and her twin brother Tim, were born in Osage, on June 30, 1959, to James Willam(Bill) and Dorothy Marie Anna (Halverson) Hegland. Bec graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1977. She was proud of the fact that she was a part of the largest graduating class that St. Ansgar has ever had.

The week after her graduation she began work at St. Ansgar State Bank in St. Ansgar. This was to be a part time job for the summer that eventually turned into her life’s work, having spent a total of 36 years there as a devoted employee. Her job meant the world to her, often times placing it above her own wants and needs. She considered her employer and fellow workers as her 2nd family. They were all extremely near and dear to her heart.

Bec was also a devoted daughter to her parents. She spent the major part of her life with her parents, helping to take care of their needs. When her dad passed away in 1996 she then focused her attention on her mom, who she not only lived with but worked with, side by side, at the bank. It didn’t matter what task she was ever asked to do, Bec took it on and did her very best. She loved giving tours of the bank to interested students and enjoyed her extra special jobs at Christmas time.

Bec was a very special sister as well. She was always ready to lend an ear or a helping hand to her sister and brothers no matter what was asked of her. She also was very willing to give her advice or opinion to help them out, sometimes even when it was not asked for. She truly loved her family with her whole heart and being. Her family was her life and reason for being here.

But, the most special quality Bec possessed was that of being a wonderful aunt to all her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was also the godmother of Robyn, Bryan, Rachel, and Reid. She was like a second mom to them all. She followed their activities and interests with such passion. She thought of each of them as “her own.” All you had to do was to ask her how things were going and she would give you the latest rundown on each of their latest interests and activities. Hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas was a tradition she continued after her mother died. Going to Bec’s was definitely a special family gathering.

Her last Christmas with us will always be remembered as a special one in all of our hearts. With her whole family gathered around she was proposed to by Rick Sturm of Geneva, Iowa. She had accepted his proposal and was already planning their special day which was to be held on 12/13/14. She was filled with excitement and delight at the thought of becoming a wife, stepmother, and step-grandmother to Rick and his children.

Bec also had a very special love for her hometown as well. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher at Immanuel Lutheran Church, she served on the St. Ansgar School Board, stepping in to take over her father’s position after his passing, and an avid Saints fan. To numerous friends and students in the community she was also known as Aunt Bec, and she wore that title with honor. She was well known, along with her mom, for providing cakes for numerous activities.

Bec is survived by her sister, Mary Lowana (Paul) Hannam of St. Ansgar, and her brothers Michael (Marian) Hegland of Cedar Rapids, David (Jane) Hegland of St. Michael, Minn., her twin brother, Timothy (LaVonne) Hegland of St. Michael, Minn. and James (Linda) Hegland of Hastings, Minn. Her nieces and nephews, Robyn (Mitch) Huddle, Ryan (April) Hannam, Ross (Megan) Hannam, Rachel Hannam, Reid Hannam, Joe (Alison) Hegland, Sam (Hayley) Hegland, Matthew (Christan) Hegland, Kevin (Laura) Hegland, Steven (Megan) Hegland, Stacy Hegland, Bryan Hegland, Marcus Hegland, Lucas Hegland, Craig (fiancé, Tracy) Hegland, and Megan Hegland. Her great nieces and nephews, Taylor and Brayden Huddle, Grace and Jenna Hannam, Sophia and Claire Hegland, Sienna Hegland and four more additions later in the year. Her aunt and uncles, Susan(Janis) Blumentals, and Wayne Rasmus. Also her fiance, Rick Sturm, and his children Dustin Sturm, Levi Sturm, and Calvin Sturm.

Bec was preceded in death by her parents, her maternal grandparents, Grover and Dora (Eske) Halverson, and Benjamin and Margaret (Hume) Hegland, her aunts, Laurene Rasmus and Dorothy Jean Harris, and her uncles, Robert Hegland, Burrell Hegland, and Thomas Hegland

Blessed be Bec’s memory.
