Mary Catherine Alexander, age 99, of Osage, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the Faith Home in Osage.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:30 p.m.
Mary was born May 26, 1914, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Hugh Joseph and Johanna “Hanna” Christine (Carroll) Smith. She was one of five daughters. On February 4, 1936, she married Alpha Louis Alexander at Sacred Heart Church in Omaha. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Aurora, KS and Wisner, Nebraska. Al worked for the Oliver Corporation in Omaha and was transferred to Charles City. In 1944, they moved to Osage and started Alexander Implement Company, an Oliver dealership. Alexander Implement Co. later became a partnership with their brother-in-law Bill Von Tersch. Mary enjoyed making ceramics, traveling, and playing bingo.
Mary is survived by her children: Patricia (Clem) Johanns of Osage, Joe (Jan) Alexander of Jesup, and Kevin (Marion) Alexander of Waterloo; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Lorena Alexander and Eva Alexander of Kansas, Rosalie Fudge of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alpha Alexander in 1979; four sisters: Anna Dieteman, Margaret Smith, Philomena Murtaugh, and Cecilia Von Tersch.
