Gertrude May 1925-2013

Gertrude May died peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2013, in her home at Adams, Minnesota, surrounded by her family.

Gertrude Sybilla (Frein) May was born May 29, 1926, in Stacyville, Iowa, to Math and Elizabeth (Gilles) Frein. She attended school in Johnsburg, Minnesota, and Bailey, Iowa. On August 1, 1945, she married Edward May at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams. They raised a family of eight children.

Gert was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women. She enjoyed volunteering at Sacred Heart School and at the Adams Health Care Center, where she worked as a rehab aid for 12 years. During that time, she helped organize the Adams Health Care Center Auxiliary. She was awarded the Outstanding Senior Citizen of Mower County in 1998.

She enjoyed singing in the church choir and signing with the clients in the nursing home. She also enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, sewing, crafts and painting on rocks. A favorite hobby of hers was playing games and making cards on the computer. She frequently visited with her family on Skype.

Gert was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her family and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son Kevin in 1979, two brothers, Fritz Frein and John Frein and six sisters, Ceal Bottema, Mildred Mullenbach, Stella Rauen, Sr. Irene Frein, Mary Loecher and Kay Lechowit.

Gert is survived by her husband of 68 years, Edward; sons: Dan (Cheri) May, Adams, Jerry (Mary) May, Boerne, Texas; daughters: Susan May, Minneapolis; Nancy (Bruce) Brehmer, Rochester, Minn.; Cindy (Mike) Schneider, Elkton, Minn.; LuAnn (Ron) Stroup, Rose Creek, Minn.; Anne (Floyd) Halbach, Adams; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; sister: Joann Heimer, Adams; brothers-in-law: Dave (LaVonne) Gerber, Norb (Helen) Gerber, Stan (Stephanie) Gerber and Paul Gerber; sisters-in-law: Marie (Doug) Behrenfeld and Charlene Gerber; many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams with Father Swaminatha Pothireddy officiating. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Adams Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be a visitation at the church on Thursday morning for one hour before the service.
