Halvor Gulbrandsen (Gilbertson) was born between 1828 to 1833 at Rustad, Hurdal, Akershus, Norway to Gulbrand Halvorsen and wife.

He married Martha Cathrina Gulliksdatter on December 2, 1858 at Rustadbakken, Hurdal, Akershus, Norway. Marriage record found in the Norwegian Digital Archives for Hurdal in Hurdal, Akershus, Norway, 1846-1859, page 233, entry #17. Halvor Gulbrandsen of Rustad, age 29 groom; Marthe Katrine Gulliksdatter of Lundbye age 22. His father: Gulbrand Halvorsen. Her father: Gullik Olsen. Witnesses: Halvor Amundsen Rustad and Kari Johannesen Vegli.

1858: Couple living at Nordre Rustadeie according to census at the Norwegian Digital Archives.

Found in the 1865 census at Rustadbakken, Hurdal, Akershus, Norway: Halvor Gulbrandsen age 32, Marthe Gullicksdatter 28, Gulbrand Halvorsen 6, Anne Maria Halvorsdatter 4, Hanna Halvorsdatter 2, unk first name Halvorsdatter age 1 (all born at Hurdalen) (unknown later named Inger).

Halvor and Martha had 4 children who were all born at Rustadbakken farm, Hurdal, Akershus, Norway:
Gulbrand Gunerius (b February 2, 1859, died October 6, 1931 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa) (later used the surnames Halvorsen Horgen after emigration);
Anna Maria (b December 1, 1860, married Nels Anderson July 22, 1878 Gran, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway, died April 29, 1931 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa);
Hanna Mathilde (b November 1863, married Micheal Oleson, died unknown in USA); and
Inger Margrethe (b February 1866, died before 1900).

The couple emigrated to Clermont, Fayette County, Iowa abt April 1883.

Found in the 1885 census living at Clermont, Fayette, Iowa in town: Micheal Oleson 22, shoe maker; wife, Hannah Oleson 21; Halvor Gilbertson age 60; Marthe Gilbertson age 50. (Hanna is their daughter).

The couple moved to MItchell County, Iowa about 1886, probably traveling with their son, Gulbrand who moved his family to Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa in 1886.

Not 100% sure but believe that Halvor Gulbrandsen died October 3, 1886 at Mitchell County, Iowa and is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa, Lot Z7.

(Note by contributor: This information is what I found searching records posted on the internet, not 100% sure it is correct but can be used for reference. Interesting that Halvor would be buried at Rock Creek Cemetery when later, his wife Martha, was buried at Osage City Cemetery. Also found records for his son Gulbrand and Gulbrand's wife, Ingeborg, that state that couple is buried at Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery and also at Osage City Cemetery which is conficting. )
