CHARLES CITY, IOWA - John Kraus, 91, of Charles City, died Sunday, September. 8, 2013, at Cedar Health in Charles City.
A funeral Mass for John Kraus will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Reverend Mel Hemann will preside at the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church an hour prior to the service.
John Vincent Kraus was born August 11, 1922, at Stephen, Minnesota, the son of John F. and Agatha (Hemann) Kraus. He received his education at Visitation Academy in Stacyville. John proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II spending time in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
On August 3, 1944, he was united in marriage to Bernadette Koenigs at Sacred Heart Church in Meyer. They moved to Charles City in 1965. John worked as a mail courier for a brief time and for 23 years as Director of Housekeeping and Safety at the Floyd County Medical Center. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, Environmental Managers Association where he served twice as president, National Executive Housekeepers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Iowa Fireman’s Association.
John was a volunteer fireman and also volunteered with Heart to Home Hospice. He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, traveling and collecting key chains. One of the highlights of his life was going on the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. to see the World War II Memorial. John will always be remembered for his knack of telling jokes. Family was always important to John and he looked forward to spending time with them and sharing life’s experiences.
Living family members include his wife, Bernadette of Charles City; six children, Kay (Dick) Deist of Charles City, Allan (Brenda) Kraus of Stradford, Karen (Virgil) Burns of Charles City, Gary Kraus of Charles City, Mary (John) Hofkes of Chipawa Falls, Wisconsin, and Jean (Steve) Shannon of Charles City; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Kraus and a sister, Gertrude Halbach.
