Ole Hansen Rustand Haugerud was born April 11, 1789 at the Rustand farm, Ytre Adal, Buskerud, Norway to Hans Olsen Sorum Rustand (abt 1744-1807) and Kari Olsdatter Skaranseter Storoydgarden (November 9, 1756 - 1842 Buskerud, Norway); the sixth of their eight children. His siblings were: Barbro Hansdatter (1775 - 1803); Joran Hansdatter (1778 - 1808); Kari Hansdatter Rustand (1780 - 1870); Ole Hansen (1783 - 1808); Sigrid Hansdatter (1786 - 1820); Nils Hansen Rustand Viker (1792 - 1873) and Simen Hansen (1796 - 1838).

Ole married Guri Torgrimsdatter Holte on March 24, 1815 at the Viker Church of Wiger, Ytre Adal, Buskerud, Norway. The couple had 7 children all born at Buskerud, Norway:
Kari Olsdatter (February 27, 1816-1889);
Olia Olsdatter (December 23, 1817 - September 1, 1909 Buskerud, Norway);
Hans Olsen (February 8, 1820 to unknown);

Ole the Younger Rustand Haugerud (November 16, 1831 - November 7, 1915 Saskatchewan, Canada).

The booklet "Haugerud" can be found at this Gen Web site: http://iagenweb.org/mitchell/data/haugerud.htm (written by the Elsrud family). Many more details of this family can be found there.

From that story and records found, believe that Ole and Guri separated (and later divorced 1852).

Ole moved to a house on Haugerud where he employed a housekeeper named Berit Olsdatter Rodningsand. Believe they had a daughter, Kjersti (born July 13, 1839 at Haugerud, Aadalen, Ringerike, Buskerud, Norway, died January 10, 1928 St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa. Since Ole was still married to his first wife, Kjersti's father is listed as Jacob and she used the name Kjersti Jacobsdatter Haugerud.

In May of 1852, after obtaining his divorce, Ole, Berit and Kjersti left Norway and emigrated to Muskego, Wisconsin, traveling through Quebec, Canada. Ole and Berit were married at Muskego, Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1852.

In the summer of 1853, the family of 3 moved west with the Reverand Clausen colony to settle on farmland south of St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Found in the 1856 census living at Newburg township (St Ansgar), Mitchell, Iowa: Ole Hansen 67, Betsey Hansen 43. Daughter Kjersti married Andrew E Erickson on October 11, 1856 at St Ansgar; they had 12 children.

Ole's wife, Berit (who was born July 18, 1813 at Buskerud, Norway) died on July 25, 1857 at Newburg township, Mitchell County, Iowa and was buried at the Old Mill (also known as Blakestad or Petersen) Cemetery in Newburg township. (Berit's Find a Grave Memorial # 11011037.)

Ole moved to near Albert Lea, Freeborn, Minnesota after her death.

Found in the Minnesota September 21, 1857 census at Township 102, Freeborn, MN near Albert Lea: Ole Hanson age 68.

Ole married a third time to Anne Hansdatter Svensrud (a widow) about 1859 at either St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa or Albert Lea, MN. (Anne born abt 1800 at Oppland, Norway).

Found in the 1860 Federal Census living at Hayward, Freeborn, Minnesota; Post office, Albert Lea: Ole Hanson 72, Ann Hanson 60.

Ole Hansen Rustand Haugerud died on July 22, 1861 at Albert Lea, Freeborn, Minnesota and was buried at the Mill Road (also known as Blakestad or Pedersen) Cemetery, Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa beside Berit.

Note: There are dozens of trees on Ancestry.com which have Ole listed as: Ole Hansen, Ole Hansen Rustand and Ole Hansen Rustand Haugerud, all variations of the same name.
Many thanks to the Elsrud family for sharing their booklet Haugerud, a fascinating look at the history of a Norwegian family who emigrated to America.
