Mathilda May Haugerud was born​​ May 18, 1875 at the Haugerud farm in Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Ole the Younger Rustand Haugerud and Maren Torine Ask, the fifth of their ten children.

The family sold Haugerud and moved in 1879 to North Dakota. Found in the 1880 census at Drayton, Pembina, Dakota Territory: Ole O. Haugerud 46, Mary Haugerud 33, Laura Haugerud 12, George Haugerud 10, Matilda Haugerud 5, Annetta Haugerud 3, Tolef Johnson 27.

Family moved again to Wisconsin. Found in the 1900 census at Brannon, Price, Wisconsin: Ole O Haugerud 64, Maren Haugerud 53, George Haugerud 29, Mathilda Haugerud 24, Otto Haugerud 18, Alfred Haugerud 17, Ida Haugerud 14, Milliard Haugerud 5.

Mathilda married John Peter Peterson probably at Price, Wisconsin. (John Peter Peterson was born July 15, 1876 in Sweden and had emigrated to America.

1903: Emigrated to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada. The couple had 4 children: Mabel, Lloyd O, Edna and Alice.

1916: widowed: Mathilda Peterson 40, Mable Peterson 15, Lloyd Peterson 13, Edna Peterson 11, Alice Peterson 7.

Death unknown, most likely in Saskatchewan, Canada.
