Mrs. H. Carpenter Aged 90, Died Sun.
Invalid for Years

Mrs. Horace Carpenter passed away at her home Sunday at the age of 90 years, after an illness of many years. She had been able to be up and about her home until a week ago, however. Mrs. Carpenter had been a resident of Osage 66 years, and had seen the town expand from a group of a few houses and stores to it's present size.

She was born April 10, 1845 at Cambridge, Ohio, to Mr. and Mrs. John Kline. When she was eight years old they moved to a farm near Portage, Wisconsin, where she finished her education.

At the age of 19 she was married to Mr. Carpenter, November 21, 1862. To them were born three children, Ida, who died at the age of three years, at Portage; Willie, who passed away when 17 years of age here in Osage; and Ernest, of New York City. The latter is known all over the United States as a theatrical producer. His son, Jack, was her only grandchild. The only surviving relative in this vicinity is a niece, Minnie Kline Sprung, of Riceville.

Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter and their family moved to Mitchell in 1870, when he was appointed steward of the county farm. After filling that office for a time they purchased a residence in the Third Ward, and she has lived there the past forty-five years.

Mrs. Carpenter was of a most loveable, kindly nature, and even through her years of ill health, never expressed any impatience or complaint. Her whole interest was for her husband, son, and her home. When she was 17 years of age she joined the Methodist Church at Portage, and took an active part in it as long as she was able.

Mr. Carpenter was a Civil War veteran, and when the Woman's Relief Corps was organized here under the direction of Mrs. Rosa Gardner, it's first president, Mrs. Carpenter became a member and was always interested in the work, attended the gatherings, and gave it her support.

She was the oldest member of the Osage Methodist Church, having joined the body seventy-four years ago.

During late years Mrs. Fred Hammond has given Mrs. Carpenter kind and considerate care, and was with her when she passed away at 9:25 Sunday morning.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Champion Funeral Home, conducted by the Reverend F. A. Court, and burial was made in the Osage Cemetery beside her husband.
