OSAGE, IOWA — John M. Weaverling, 88, of Osage died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient unit in Mason City.

John M. Weaverling, age 88, of Osage, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Graveside inurnment services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013, at the Osage Cemetery with military honors by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920 and Osage American Legion Post 278. Rev. Bryan Lagerstam will officiate. Following services, there will be a time for lunch and fellowship at the Osage V.F.W. Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the John M. Weaverling Memorial Fund.
John was born April 22, 1925, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Perry and Anna (Popp) Weaverling. He graduated from Osage High School in 1943. John served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a B-17 Tail Gunner, a Purple Heart recipient, and had the privilege of flying to Washington, D.C. on two Honor Flights.
On May 4, 1947, he married Cleone Klemesrud at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa, Iowa. John worked at Sunny Brae Golf Course and Kollman Quarry. He also worked as clerk and a carrier at the U.S. Post Office in Osage for 12 years and then was a rural carrier for 20 years out of Osage and Stacyville. John was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Boy Scouts, Masonic Lodge, Osage V.F.W. and Osage American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and bowling, but his true passion was fishing. John also enjoyed “500” and bridge clubs, square dancing, and was an avid reader.
John is survived by his wife, Cleone Weaverling of Osage; his children, Connie (Pat) Flanery of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Russ (Paula) Weaverling of Mitchell; grandchildren, Aaron (Tammy) Ferguson, Nicole (Nic) Ferguson-Kehe, Jamie Flanery and John Flanery; great-grandchild, Laylah Ferguson; sisters-in-law, Janet Weaverling, and Mary Lou (Dick) Dean, all of Osage; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Loren and Evelyn Weaverling, Donald Weaverling, Melvin and Mary Ann Weaverling, and Marold Weaverling; and sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Bud Betts.
