Gubjorg (Julia) Guttormsdatter (Anderson) – Mrs. Johan (John) Olson

Gubjorg Guttormsdatter was born February 28, 1857 at Saugseiet (Saugshagen), Gran, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway to parents Guttorm Anderson and Johanne Gudbrandsdatter, the third of their five children. She was baptized on April 13, 1857 at Gran, Norway. Birth/baptismal records found in the Norwegian Digital Archives on line for Gran, Hadeland 1856-1874, page 36, entry #107, birth date is February 28, 1857 at Saugseiet. Baptismal sponsors: Dorothe Gudbrandsdatter, Kirstie Guttormsdatter, Niels Anderson, Peder Larsen Framstad, Anders Pedersen Saugseiet.

Gubjorg left Gran with her parents and siblings to emigrate to America. The left on May 7, 1874 aboard the ship "Oder" and traveled over land to settle on a farm in Rock township, Mitchell County, Iowa.

Gubjorg married Johan (John) Olson on November 25, 1882 at First Lutheran Church, St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa. The couple had 4 children: Caroline (1883-1973); Gustav (1886-1946); Olga Johanna (1895-1995) and Julius Gerhard (1898-1991).

Julia Olson died March 29, 1939 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Mrs. Gubjor Olson passed away at her home in Osage on March 29, 1939 at the age of 82 yrs, 1 mo and 21 days. She was born at Gran, Hadeland, Norway February 7, 1857 to Guttorm and Johanne Gudbrandsdatter Anderson. They immigrated to this country and came to Mitchell Co., Iowa, in 1874 when she was 17 years of age. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of her native country.

She married John (Johan) Olson on November 25, 1882 by Rev. Johan Olsen of St. Ansgar, Iowa. They settled on their farm in Rock Township and lived there until 1920 when they moved to Osage, Iowa.

Mr. Olson passed away July 18, 1925. Mrs. Olson has always been an esteemed and active member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church and Ladies' Aid Society.

Surviving are four children: Mrs. Oscar (Caroline) Field of Nora Springs; Gustave and Julius of Meroa; and Olga Olson of Osage. Also nine grandchildren and a brother, Chris Anderson of Joel, Wisconsin survive.

Funeral services were held at RCLC April 1, 1939 with the Rev. O.C. Myhre officiating and burial was in the RCLC cemetery. (Discrepancy found in her birth date, obituary is incorrect.)
