Dr. Howard Abens, age 82, of Osage, died Monday, April 29, 2013, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with Rev. Bryan Lagerstam and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Howard Martin Abens was born June 5, 1930, near Gilmore City, the son of Lawrence and Edna (Keck) Abens. He grew up in the Lutheran church, and was active in band and choir. Howard graduated from Bode High School in 1947. He ran an excavating business and farmed with his brother, Kenneth, until he entered the service in 1950. He served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War at Camp McCoy, WI, and in Germany.

On December 28, 1954, Howard married Rita DeGroote, who had talked him into becoming a chiropractor, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode. He served as class president, and graduated valedictorian from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport in June of 1957. Howard started his chiropractic practice in Cedar Falls before moving to Osage in March of 1959, where he practiced for 54 years. Howard was active at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, president of the congregation, and was once the chairman of a ‘practically permanent preacher-picking committee.’ He greatly enjoyed singing in the choir and was a member of several quartets over the years. Howard served for 12 years on the City Council. He was active in Rotary Club and served as president of both the Conservation Club and the North Central district of the Chiropractic Association. He also served on the NIACC board and was active in Toastmasters Club.

When his children were growing up, Howard enjoyed taking them boating, fishing, and swimming at different lakes on Thursdays and the weekends. He enjoyed reading, and had an amazing library of Christian, self- help, and professional books. Howard and his wife enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and 13 foreign countries, including seven cruises.

Howard is survived by four children and 16 grandchildren, Peggy (Bob) Appel of Altoona and their children, Alana (Micah) Hildreth, Aaron, and Daniel; Patty (Jon) Fredrickson of Jacksonville, FL, and their children Joshua, and Katelyn; Jim (Kathy) Abens of Eau Claire, WI, and their children Matthew, Monica, Connor, and Grant; Stu (Temi) Abens of Waco, TX and their children Megan, Christopher, and Amy Abens, Jordan (Justin) Mechell, Seth, Cody, and Jesse Stanford; one great-grandson, Paxton Mechell; two sisters, Vonnie (Buck) Noah of Des Moines, and Marilee Bland of Humboldt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rita in 2009; his brothers, Kenneth & Delmer; and a grandson, Bobby Appel.
