RICEVILLE, IOWA — Lovene Helen Howland, 85, of Riceville, passed away at the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center on Friday, April 19, 2013.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 25, at the United Methodist Church in Riceville at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Candareah Carey officiating. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends and family may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Wednesday, April 24, during the hours of 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Thursday, April 25.

Lovene was born on January 15, 1928, in Cresco, to Harold and Eva (Frank) Eaton. She attended local schools and graduated from Crestwood High School.

On January 26, 1946, Lovene was united in marriage to Raymond Lyle Howland in Council Bluffs. They were blessed with five children — David, Donna, Robert, Thomas and Timothy. They resided in Riceville most of their married life. Lovene was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Riceville.

At the early age of 32, Lovene had a stroke which caused many personal challenges for her during her lifetime. She lost her loving husband, Ray, in 1984, and moved to the Stacyville Community Nursing/Assisted Living Home in 1985.

In 1987, Lovene moved to Waverly, to be near her daughter and resided at an assisted living apartment until she suffered a brain tumor and underwent surgery. Following her recovery, she moved back to Stacyville where she resided for over 10 years.

In 1998, she moved back to her beloved hometown and lived at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center which was her home.

Throughout the years, Lovene kept her good humor and always had a smile on her face. Lovene’s greatest love in life was listening to her son Tim’s music. She also dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards with her friends, and doing ceramics and crafts.

Survivors include four sons: David Howland and his wife Vicki of Riceville, Robert Howland and his wife Karen of Cedar Falls, Thomas Howland and his wife Diane of Riceville, Timothy Howland and his wife Cindy of Protivin, and a daughter, Donna Penning and her husband Lee of San Jose, Calif .

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, a brother, Harlan (Pat) Eaton of Jacksonville, Florida, and two sisters, Alice Belle (Bud) Albertson of Iowa City, and Maureen (Wally) Vreeman of Rochester, Minnesota.

Lovene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ray, a sister, Norma Jean Ernst, and a brother, Charles Eaton.
