Osage, Iowa — Marvin E. Bethke Sr., 80, of Osage, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Carl Bethke officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Marvin E. Bethke, Sr.

(Died February 16, 2013)

Marvin E. Bethke, Sr., age 80, of Osage, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage, with his family at his bedside.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 21, 2013, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Carl Bethke officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Marvin was born June 19, 1932, in Grafton, Iowa, the son of Gustav and Leona (Wilde) Bethke. He attended school in Grafton and Plymouth, Iowa. In 1951, Marvin joined the United States Army and served with both the 24th and 25th Infantry Divisions during the Korean Conflict. While serving in Korea, he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medal with two oak leaf clusters for wounds sustained in combat.

Upon leaving the Army, Marvin married Phyllis I. Wendorff on February 15, 1953. Marvin and Phyllis lived in Osage and were married for 53 years when Phyllis died in 2006. Marvin worked a myriad of jobs over the years ranging from driving straight truck hauling cabbage for Herb Marcks of St. Ansgar, to being the custodian of the County Disposal west of Osage on highway nine until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed listening to old time music such as polkas and waltzes, playing his accordion, camping, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.

Marvin is survived by his eight children, LeRoy of Osage, David (Jennifer) of Northampton, Pennsylvania, Carl (Mary) of Osage, Darlene (Allyn) Sheldon of Osage, Barbara (Murray) Ames of Canada, DeWayne (Laura) of Osage, Marvin, Jr. (Mary) of Osage, Kenneth (Debra) of Stewartville, Minnesota; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his niece, Alberta (David) Cresswell of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his devoted wife, Phyllis; his sister, Patricia “Patty” Funk; and a niece, Luella Betow.
