Memorial services for Dr. C.R. Waldeland, 85, a former St. Ansgar resident who died January 3, 1987 will be held Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Thomas Hughes and the Rev. Maynard Iverson, a cousin by marriage of Dr. Waldeland's, officiating. A daughter, Dorrit Edwards and son will represent the family at the tribute service. A social time will follow at the parish center.
Dr. Conrad R. Waldeland was born April 27, 1901 in Fertile, the oldest son of the Rev. M.E. and Laura (Eggen) Waldeland, who served First Lutheran church in St. Ansgar and parishes in Carpenter and Deer Creek from 1902-1927.
Dr. Waldeland attended elementary school and high school in St. Ansgar and was graduated in 1920. He graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. in 1924 and received his PhD. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1929. He did his post doctoral studies in chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.
In 1933 he married Harriett Osterberg of Virginia, Minn. Dr. Waldeland was professor and chairman of the chemistry department of Luther College, Decorah, from 1933 to 1942. From 1943 to 1969 he was professor and chairman of the chemistry department of Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa.
When he retired in 1969 he moved from Claysville, Pa, to Tarpon Springs, Fla., later living in Williamsburg, Va. and at the time of his death was living in Matawan, N.J.
Surviving are his wife, Harriett of Matawan; two daughters, Valdeane of Acton, Mass. and Dorrit of Matawan; five grandchildren and one brother, Olaf of Bloomington, Minn.
A brother, Paul, preceded him in death in 1974.
Burial was in Matawan, following services at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Old Bridge, N.J.
