Issac Patterson Died Friday, Age 86 Years

November 30, 1921

Another of the prominent citizens of this section has passed to his reward. This time it is Hon.Isaac Patterson who died at a far greater age than is allotted to most men--More than 86 years having been born November 7, 1835.

Mr. Patterson's birth place was Sharon, in Trumbell County, Ohio. Here he spent his early childhood. When he was eight years of age the family moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, where they resided until 1855. When they came to Mitchell County, settling at the town of Mitchell. Thus he was identified with the history of our country for nearly a third of a century, and for many years was one of the most prominent men in the county.

In 1861, almost at the very beginning of the civil war, he enlisted in the Third Iowa Regiment as a private, but he steadily rose, and came out of the army as a captain. In 1886 he purchased the farm 1 mile east of St. Ansgar, which has since been his home and lived on it for more than one half a century. On October 19th, 1869, he was married to Jennie Atherton daughter of T.M. Atherton editor of the Mitchell County press of Osage, and they lived a happy married life for almost 45 years. She died August 1914. During the last few years, his niece, Mrs Levi Gifford has very devotedly cared for him.

Mr. Patterson was a very active man; he was not only one of the best farmers of the county, but always took a keen interest in the public affairs in his community, the state and the nation. He voted the republican ticket from the formation of the party until his death. At the election in the fall of 1870, he was elected to the state legislature, and served until 1882. In 1906, he was appointed postmaster of St. Ansgar, a position which he held for nine years.

In 1904, he suffered a stroke of paralysis and after that his health was always frail. Two years ago he had the misfortune to fall and break his hip and thou that completely healed in spite of his advanced years, from that time on he was practically helpless and was tenderly cared for by his niece Mrs. Levi Gifford.

He leaves surviving him two brothers Nathon N. Patterson, of Zumbrota, Minnesota and John Patterson of Bradenstown, Flordia.

The funeral was held from the residence yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W.A. Buell, and burial was in the family lot in the Osage Cemetery.
