Harriet Ann (Scofield) Fessenden – August 8, 1839 – January 24, 1921
Harriet Ann Scofield was born in New York State on Aug.8, 1839 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lou Miles, at Waterloo, Iowa on Jan.24, 1921.
At the age of 10 years she moved with her parents to Wisconsin, locating at Indian Ford. In 1859 she married Eli R. Fessenden. They made their home in Wisconsin until 1869 when they moved to Missouri, later returning to Iowa settling on a farm in Rock Township, where they lived until the infirmities of age began to creep on.
They moved to Osage remaining there until the death of her husband on April 11, 1910, after which she gave up housekeeping and divided her time among her children.
On Nov. 19 she went to Waterloo to visit her daughter there and on Jan. 4 was taken ill. Her condition seemed to improve but on January 13th she suffered a stroke of paralysis, passing away on January 24th.
Mrs. Fessenden was a great lover of home, never caring to mingle much in the things of the world. Her home, husband, children and grandchildren were her life. She was a good friend and neighbor, always ready in her younger years to help those in trouble. She was the mother of 8 children, 4 boys & 4 girls.
One son Frank and one daughter, Mrs. Mamie Van de Walker preceded her in death.
Those left to mourn the departing of this faithful loving mother are Lester, Medford, Wisconsin; Orra of Fulton, Wisconsin; Mrs. Helen Simpson, and Mrs. Lou Miles of Waterloo; Mrs. Hattie Torney and Charlie Fessenden of Osage; 30 grandchildren 9 great-grandchildren..
There are also left 2 sisters and 1 brother.There was a short prayer service held at Peterson Bros. Chapel in Waterloo at 8 a.m. January 26th with Rev. Kelford of the Burton Ave. Baptist Church officiating. The body was taken by loving hands to the family lot in the Osage cemetery and laid to rest beside the husband and son.
