Bertha Maria Halvorson (Dammen) was born December 3, 1861 at Horgeneiet, Gran, Hadeland, Norway to Ivers Halvorson Dammen (born April 8, 1826 Hadeland, Norway, died October 9, 1899 Mitchell, Iowa) and Siri Hansdatter (born August 9, 1821, died August 16, 1871 both at Hadeland, Norway).

Bertha's siblings were:
Halvor Iversen Dammen Halvorson (born July 3, 1850 Hadeland, Norway, died May 22, 1938 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa);
Ingeborg (born April 2, 1852 Hadeland, Norway, died January 23, 1929 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa); Hans Halvorson (born July 7, 1855 Hadeland, Norway, died October 7, 1931 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa);
Martha (born May 7, 1858 Hadeland, Norway, married Simon Engebretson 1881 Mitchell, Iowa, died December 23, 1924 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa) and
Johanna Iversdatter (born February 22, 1862 Hadeland, Norway, married Carl Johan Odden June 10, 1892 Meroa, Iowa, died April 24, 1938 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa).

The father and children emigrated to Mitchell Co, Iowa about May 1882.

Bertha married Anton Larsen Ask abt 1889 at Mitchell County, Iowa. The couple had 4 children (one name unknown):
Lawrence Ingval Ask (born March 15, 1891 (cemetery record says August 18, 1889), married Julia Moen, died September 7, 1978);
Estella "Stella" Therese (born March 15, 1891, married John Myrhe, died 1968);
Annie M. (born March. 19, 1899, died March. 22, 1899) (Conflicting dates found for the children)

Bertha and Anton divorced about 1900. Bertha spent much of her life then living at the State Hospital in Independence, Washington, Buchanan, Iowa. Bertha died 1931 Iowa and is probably buried at Mitchell County, Iowa but haven't been able to find her exact death or burial site.

Found in the 1900, 1915 censuses living at Osage, Mitchell, IA:
1900: Bertha Marion Ask, Stella living at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa. Bertha listed as married but not living w/ Anton; says born 1862; married 1888: Bertha Marion Ask 37, Stella F Ask 9.
1915: Bertha Ask age 52, says does housework, insane, born 1862, finished 8th grade, Lutheran, can read and write.

Found in the 1910, 1930 censuses living at Independence, Washington, Buchanan, Iowa at the State Hospital as an inmate:
1910: divorced, says emigrated 1887: Bertha Marion Ask 47. 1930: Bertha Ask age 67, age 20 when first married, inmate.

Bertha's maiden surname was Halvorsdatter or Halvorson but the family sometimes used Dammen.
