ST. ANSGAR,IOWA - Dorothy Margaret Martha Nieman, 95, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, passed away on July 13th of cancer at her daughter's home with her family.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Weeg officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. Visitation is scheduled after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy was born on August 27th, 1916, in St. Ansgar, Iowa, the daughter of Walter C. and Hedwig (Hattie) A. (Feldt) Gutman. She was the oldest of nine children and learned to help her mother early on with cooking, baking and raising the children. Dorothy was five years old when her family moved to a farm west of Randall, Minn.
She married Harry Herman Nieman on July 17th, 1935, at St. Cloud, Minn. They lived on the Otto Nieman farm west of Little Falls, Minn., for nine years, then moved to Britt, Iowa, for ten years and then moved to Wells, Minn., for two years before moving back to St. Ansgar, Iowa, in June 1956.
After working out of the home, she started a greenhouse at her home in the 1970s since Harry was in poor health. Harry passed away on June 16th, 1975. Her family helped with much of the work in the greenhouse. And her grandchildren learned much about growing plants. She sold the greenhouse to Joyce (her granddaughter) and Tom Crowley on August 29th, 1992.
Dorothy retired to a new home on the south side of St. Ansgar. Here she crocheted and sewed making doilies, afghans and many quilts for family members and the church. Dorothy enjoyed having the great-grandchildren come over to visit, learn to cook and bake. They then would play games and enjoy the treats that they made. Dorothy enjoyed having friends and family over to visit, making wonderful diners the family will long remember. She also enjoyed traveling to visit family from Alaska to Florida.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Yvonne Krumm of St. Ansgar, Iowa, and Harry Otto (Dorothy Jean) of Mapleview, Minn.; grandchildren, Donald Krumm, Ocala, Fla., Debra (James) Nelson of Rose Creek, Minn., Joyce (Thomas) Crowley of St. Ansgar, Iowa, and Pastor Diane Krumm of Mayville, N.D.; great-grandchildren Kristina (Steven) Morische of Dayton, Maine, Lacey Crowley of Speicher, Germany, Shawn Crowley of Fairborn, Ohio; and two sisters, Delores Mooney of Baltimore, Md., and Elaine Little of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and one brother, Myron Gutman of Fairbanks, Alaska; sister-in-law, Geraldine Barney of Tucson, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Frances Gutman of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother-in-law, Duane Miller of Long Prairie, Minn.; brother-in-law, Jim Lillemo of Isanti, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
