The son of Mark and Mary Dargan Sloan, he was born on August 24, 1924, in Riceville, Iowa.

Mark joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served for four years during WWII. After his time in the service, he earned his high school diploma and attended Iowa State University and the University of Iowa on the GI Bill.

He married Darlene Morris on August 20, 1952, and they had four children. He worked for Northwestern Bell and US West for 38 years. Mark volunteered for his church, The PATCH Program, and the Blood Center. Mark, known as Buck by most people, was famous for his sense of humor, his one-liners and his recitations of naughty limericks.

He will be missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Darlene; children, Mark, Kirk (Denise), Kent (Denise) and Annie (Abe); ten grandchildren, Valeria, Matt, Michelle, Jake, Mackenzie, Keegan, Coleman, Luke, Rowan and Caleb.

Mark is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Margaret.

Mark spent his last four years living at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the center for the excellent care they provided. The nurses, CNAs, and kitchen staff of the Light side were a great comfort to Darlene during Mark's time at the center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Chapter of American Parkinson's Disease Association.
