Funeral services will be held this afternoon, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church for Mrs. Jake Affeldt, 37, and her son, David 10, who were killed in an automobile accident Saturday evening near their home at Lodi, California. The Rev. Walter Schroeder will conduct the service.

The accident happened when their car, driven by Mr. Affeldt, was struck by another. Mrs. Affeldt was killed instantly but her son lived for a few hours. Mr. Affeldt suffered rib fractures and arm injuries, the extent of which is not as yet fully known but he is still in the Lodi Hospital, said to be in serious condition.

The bodies of Mrs. Affeldt and David were brought to the Loper Funeral Home where they will remain until the funeral.

Mrs. Affeldt was born in Riceville in 1913 to Mr. and Mrs. William Herdman. In August 1938, she was married and the couple established its home in California. They operated a dairy farm near Lodi.

Survivors include her husband; her parents here in Riceville; brothers, William, Independence, Robert, Vinton and a sister, Mrs. Robert Boswell, San Francisco.

At the time this is written, Tuesday, William Herdman is critically ill, suffering with virus pneumonia, at the hospital at Independence.

MANY AT DOUBLE FUNERAL FOR
MRS. J. AFFELDT AND DAVID

Funeral rites for Mrs. Jake Affeldt and son, David, who lost their lives in an automobile accident at Berkeley, California were held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville last Thursday afternoon. Many of the friends who attended were not able to get into the church because of the large crowd present.

Mrs. Affeldt's sister, Mrs. R. F. Boswell, (Helen) who accompanied the bodies here from Berkeley, says that she and her family plan to move near to Riveville, possibly to their former location at Waterloo, this fall, so as to be near her parents.

Jake Affeldt, seriously injured in the accident that took the lives of his wife and son, is reported as gaining satisfactorily, but is still hospitalized.

Relatives attending the funeral rites were: R. F. Bosewell; a brother of Mrs. Affeldt, R. J. Hedman and wife, Vinton; aunts, Mrs. F. F. Blandin, Grinnell, Mrs. J. H. Mahaffey, Storm lake, and husbands; uncle, Joe Wilkes, wife and son, Dean, Rochester, Minnesota, cousin, Mrs. Milton Hardke and husband, Preston, Minnesota, Aunts, Mrs. L. C. Aldrich, Fergus Falls, Minnesota; Mrs. Olaf Nagli, Brainard, Minnesota; Mrs. Ralkp Herdman, Almora, Minnesota; cousin, Mrs. and Mrs, Leonard Lindstrom, Renville, minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Boswell and Mrs. William Boswell, Kansas City, Missouri; also a group of friends from Vinton.

Affeldt relatives from Wykoff, Minnesota, are: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Affeldt; Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Affeldt; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Affeldt and Francis' Victor Ford, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Freeheit, Henry Miland' Mrs. Harold Hingeveldt, Mrs. George Ferderer.
