ALICE MILES, FORMER
CEDAR VALEY STUDENT
DIED ON OCTOBER 30(Howard County Times)
Alice May, eldest daughter of Jesse and Flora Watson Miles departed from her earthly to her heavenly home on October 30, 1924. She was born on May 25, 1887, at Saratoga, where she lived until the time of her death.
Her early education was received at the country school, after which she attended the Osage Seminary, graduating with the class of 1918.
Her one ambition was to become a nurse. In order to fulfill this desire she enrolled as a student at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, but after attending part of two years was obliged to give up the work on account of declining health.
She has always been an example of patience and cheerfulness. She never complained of her burden being too heavy, but often expressed gratitude that she had it to bear instead of her loved ones.
She was baptized in the Christian faith in early childhood. Later in life she accepted her Saviour. Almost her last words were that she had "tried to do right," and God holds us accountable not for what we accomplish, but what we try to do. She was one of God's precious gems. She had an unusually sunny disposition, which was rewarded by a deep and loyal devotion from all who knew her best.
Those left to mourn are her mother, father, sister and grandmother, besides a host of relatives and friends.
She leaves a void in our hearts that never can be filled.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Hempstead, of Muscatine, a former pastor, were held at the home on Sunday, November 2, 1924.
