OSAGE - Howard "Sharky" Penney, 98, of Osage and formerly of Little Cedar, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Pastor Gary Gilbert officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery at Little Cedar with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.
Howard was born Feb. 20, 1914, at Little Cedar, the son of Herbert and Gladys (Makepeace) Penney. He graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1932.Howard was united in marriage to Wilhelmina "Minnie" Arndt on July 26, 1943, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. He served on the battleship U.S.S. Texas in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
In 1945, Howard and Minnie started farming together near Little Cedar. They moved to Osage in 1993. Howard served on the Little Cedar Co-op Board of Directors and was a member of the Little Cedar Gun Club, Osage American Legion and Osage V.F.W. Howard played catcher for the Little Cedar Semi-Pro Baseball Team. He enjoyed trap shooting, hunting and farming.
Howard is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilhelmina "Minnie" Penney in 2011; a brother, Stuart C. Penney; and a sister, Dorothy (Penney) Drum.
