Marcella A. Walk, age 94, of St. Ansgar, died Monday, February 27, 2012, in Osage, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2012, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Walter T. Enneberg American Legion Post 358 of St. Ansgar. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and will continue one hour before services at the church on Friday.

Marcella Ada Walk was the daughter of Henry J. and Meta “Matie” (Wilke) Trettin, born June 14, 1917, in Union Township, south of Grafton, Iowa. She attended country school, Grafton High School and Waldorf College. Her first job was with Sears as a cashier, followed by Standard Oil, and the secretary to R. B. Irons, Superintendent of Schools, all in Mason City. On January 20, 1944, she enlisted in the WAVES. Her training was in New York City, followed by schooling in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Marcella was assigned to an IBM unit in Washington, DC, where she kept track of all of the Navy planes around the world. She eloped and was married to Raymond Walk, QM3C, on March 12, 1945, in Providence, RI.

After the war, they returned to Mason City where they were employed. Marcella and Ray were approached by a local banker to purchase Christian Bros. General Store in Grafton. She was in business for 43 years, operating The Corner Store and later renamed Walk’s Market. Her husband, Raymond, died in February of 1981, and then her son, Stan, managed the store. In July of 1994, Marcella moved to St. Ansgar. She tried to live by the motto “Work and Pray”. She looked forward to spring every year. She was fascinated at how a brown seed planted in black dirt, given light and water, produced a green leaf.

Marcella especially enjoyed transplanting plants like geraniums. There are approximately 75 cuttings that are now rooting waiting to be planted this spring. She was a life long member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. She was also a member of its church band in the early 1930’s. Marcella looked forward to a weekly bible class, to morning (7:30 a.m.) breakfast with friends at the Sportsman’s, and eating and helping at the St. Ansgar Senior Center.

Marcella is survived by her children, Stanley Walk and Suzanne Walk of St. Ansgar, a sister-in-law, Thelma Walk of Eagan, MN, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rueben and Maxine Walk of Grafton, plus many nieces and nephews.

She would like to be remembered as one of God’s Children.
