ST. ANSGAR - Elsie Rachut, 87, of St. Ansgar, died on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar. There will be no visitation.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie was born April 25, 1924, in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, at the farm home of her parents, Henry and Ida (Groth) Pagel. She was baptized June 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Paul Brammer and confirmed April 11, 1938.

She attended Newburg No. 5 Country School for eight years and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1942. She went to Iowa State Teachers' College for one year and then began teaching at the rural school, Newburg No. 6.

On September 26, 1948, she was married to Arthur Rachut at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Theo Eickelberg. They made their home on a farm southwest of St. Ansgar. They became parents of Joyce and Jerry. In 1964 the family moved to St. Ansgar. She continued her education by taking summer classes and night classes.

At the end of the 1970 summer session she received her BA from the University of Northern Iowa. Elsie taught fourth grade in St. Ansgar Elementary School for 30 years. Following retirement she was a substitute teacher for seven years.

She served as a resident advocate at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar for 12 years. Elsie also served on the Nissen Library Board and on the St. Ansgar Heritage Association Board. She was a lifetime member of Naomi Circle and a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher for many years. Elsie was a member of Alpha Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority for educators. Her hobbies were reading, genealogy, traveling and sewing quilts for her family. Her great joys were her Savior, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; parents, Henry and Ida Pagel; brothers John and George Pagel.

Elsie is survived by her two children: Joyce (John) Westrem of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Jerry (Donna) Rachut of St. Ansgar; four grandchildren: Kelly (Adam) Beyer, Amanda (Jay) Melcher, Kris (Mandi) Rachut and Allison (Scott) Huston; four great grandchildren: Jaidyn, Bailey and Cade Beyer and Luke Melcher; two sisters: Alfrieda Crooks and Dorothy Pahl; sister in law, Luella Page; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Sunday School, St. Ansgar Fire Department or St. Ansgar Rescue.
