S. W. Hastings Died Monday At
Age of 83-Oldest Resident HereS. W. Hasting, the oldest merchant as well as the oldest resident of Osage, passed away after a lingering illness superinduced by old age.
Though the end was not unexpected, his death came as a shock to the city; both, on account of the profund respect for the sturdy old character, and for the old-time memories associated with the deceased.
Mr. Hasting was not only the oldest resident of the city, but was also the oldest merchant; many of the oldest old-timers used to buy their supplies from "Sid" Hastings.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon in charge of the Masonic orders. The pall bearers have been chosen from the Knight Templars. Mr. Hastings was the oldest Mason on the local records. He is the last of the charter Masons.
Sidney W. Hastings was born in Windsor, Vermont, December 11, 1833, one of a family of seven children. At the age of seven, he migrated with his parents to Lee county, Illinois, where he received his edcation in the pioneer schools. At the age of 14, he began driving a mail coach, which pursuit he followed in continously until 1893, when he retired. For years he was obliged to haul goods to his store by wagon from Dubuque and McGregor.
In December, 1867, he was married to Miss Ella I. Nixon. Four children were born to them: George H., William M., Donald and Willard, the latter dying in 1874.
During his long career, Mr. Hasting was closely identified with Osage, and her civic interests. For several years he was a member of the board of supervisors. He was an energetic and careful business man and acquired considerable property in the city.
In 1856, when Mr. Hasting first became identified with the city, he opened his business in a little wooden building which stood where the Gauss drug store now is located. He continued alone until 1867, when he entered into partnership with William Woods. Together they built several of the most substantial buildings on Main street. They built the Masonic building in 1869. In 1872 they were burned out of their store building and built the brick building now standing and in 1876 they built the building now ocupied by Brown's drug store. They also erected the large building which is now the Woods hospital. This building was built for an apartment house. In 1896 Mr. Hasting built the Phoenix Block, which is now occupied by Malone & Daniels.
