Ervin Gerk Died of Malignancy.

A Stacyville businessman, Ervin F. Gerk, 52, died at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital Tuesday afternoon of cancer. He had been in failing health for the past two years.

Funeral services will be held at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. Members of the St. Mary’s Court of the Foresters, the St. John’s Council of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Joseph’s Society will meet in a body outside the church before the funeral mass. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Hale Penney Fuller American Legion Post, of which he was a member.

Ervin F. Gerk was born July 15, 1917 in Stacyville, the son of Albert and Bernadetta Mauer Gerk. He attended Visitation School and on January 28, 1941 was united in marriage to Eleanor Thome. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II from April 1942 until July 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Gerk operated Gerk’s Cafe and Lounge here in Stacyville for 16 1/2 years, selling the business this past January. Mr. Gerk also operated the Elms Hotel and Cafe at Mason City for four years.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor, two sons and two daughters, Richard, living at Bensonville IL, Judith (Mrs. Kenneth Brumm) at Minneapolis, and Charles and Beverly at home, also, his mother, Bernadetta Gerk of Stacyville, two brothers, Roman of Stacyville and Robert at Charles City, and two grandchildren, Julie and Debbie Gerk.

He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Gerk, in June 1945. Mr. Gerk was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and St. Joseph’s Society, and a member of the Visitation Catholic Church. He served as a director on the Stacyville Community Nursing Home board from its inception until his death.
