Mrs. Sophia Carstens, Life-long Resident of Riceville, Dies
Mrs. Sophia Carstens, 59, who had spent her entire life in the community, died Friday at Mercy hospital at Cresco, where she had been a patient for a month. She had been in failing health for a long time.
Ruth Sophia Carstens was born Jan. 23, 1896, on a farm northwest of Riceville to Harvey and Margaret McElroy Fuller and spent her entire life in and around Riceville.
When just a baby her mother passed away, and her father then married Frances Morris, to whom she gave many thanks for kindness to her in her girlhood.
She passed away at St. Joseph's Mercy hospital, Friday Sept 23, 1955, at 10:30 a.m. at the age of 59 years and eight months. She had been in failing health for many years suffering from diabetes and complications, and had been hospitalized various times during the past two or three years.
Dec. 24, 1919, she was united in marriage to Howard McInroy of Riceville and to this union four children were born – Lela, (Mrs. Harold Engelhardt), Riceville; Mary – who died in infancy, Leonard, Charles City, and Luella, (Mrs. Wilfred Marr).
Ruth was of cheerful nature, never complaining of her illness, always looking forward to the time when she could be well and enjoy her surroundings. When a young girl, she became a member of the First Baptist church of David, Ia., and was a regular attendant when health permitted.
About 17 years ago she was united in marriage to Albert Carstens and they lived on the home farm, southwest of Riceville, until six years ago, when they moved into town.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, husband, Albert, brother, June, and daughter, Mary.
Those left to mourn her passing are her three children, six grandchildren, brother, Frank, Deadwood, S.D.; half-brother, George, Osage; two step-brothers, Elmer Morris, McIntire, and Leland Morris, Springfield, Mo., one niece and two nephews, one brother-in-law, Harry Carstens, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock at the Loper funeral home and at 2 p.m. at the Riceville Baptist church, by the Rev. William Bohi.
Mrs. Duane Lockie and the Reverend Bohi sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus".
Burial was in the family lot at Riverside Cemetery.#2
