LOIS ANN JOHANNS
AMES, IOWA — Lois Ann Johanns, 66, of Ames, died Monday (Dec. 8, 2003) at her home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames, with Father Patrick Geary presiding and Father John Herzog as homilist. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames, with a vigil service at 7 p.m.
Lois Ann Johanns was born March 18, 1937, to Edward and Ann (Merkel) Christians.
She graduated from Klemme High School in 1954. She completed her teaching certificate from Luther College in Decorah in 1956. She taught elementary school in Huxley and Sheldahl, Iowa.
She was a partner with her husband in his veterinary practice and mother to her family.
Lois married Joe Johanns in Osage at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Aug. 13, 1956. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Friendship Ark Board of Directors, Teams of Our Lady, ARC of Story County; and had been in-volved with Cursillos in Christianity, Christian Family Movement and Marriage Encounter.
Lois and Joe were instrumental in beginning the Appalachia Committee and Friendship Ark. She was named ARC of Iowa Volunteer of the Year in 1994.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Johanns, of Ames; daughter, Denise (Rodger) Lovig, of Story City; daughter, Karen (David) Burgus, of Osceola; son, Alan (Kristine) Johanns, of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Sharon (Joe) Schwabe, of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Nancy (Mark) Shaw, of Ames; and son, Joel Johanns, of Ames; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond (Julie) Christians, of Joplin, Mo.; brother, James (Gail) Christians, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; sister-in-law, Bonnie (Clarence) Christians, of Klemme; sister-in-law, Jan (Ed) Kodet, of Minneapolis, Minn.; mother-in-law, Rose Johanns, of Osage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one child; grandson, Michael David Burgus; and brother, Clarence Christians.
Memorial contributions may be given to Friendship Ark at 130 S. Sheldon Ave. in Ames, IA 50014
