Daniel Auringer was born February 24, 1846 at Onondaga, New York to Moses Auringer and Hope Hessa Darling. He had five siblings: Marcia, Jane, William Francis, Mary and Henry James Auringer.
He can be found in the 1850 census at Lafayette, Onondaga, NY living with his parents: Moses Auringer 38, Hessa Auringer 39, Marsha Auringer 13, Jane Auringer 11, Francis Auringer 8, Mary Auringer 7, Daniel Auringer 5, Henry Auringer 2.

Daniel fought in the Civil War. (There were three men with the same name who served, making research very confusing. One Daniel was his uncle and the other was from Schroppel, NY.)
Found in Ancestry.com records: Daniel Auringer; Enlistment Date: 25 Aug 1864; Enlistment Place: Cortland, New York; Side Served: Union; State Served: New York; Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 25 August 1864 at the age of 20. Enlisted in Company L, 10th Cavalry Regiment New York on 25 Aug 1864. Transferred out of Company L, 10th Cavalry Regiment New York on 17 Jun 1865. Transferred into Company L, 1st Prov'l Cavalry Regiment New York on 17 Jun 1865. Mustered Out Company L, 1st Prov'l Cavalry Regiment New York on 28 Jun 1865 at Alexandria, VA. Also found a record showing that Maria J (Torney) Auringer, Daniel's wife, received a pension from Daniel's service in the Civil War.
Daniel appears in the 1870 census at Geddes, Onondaga, NY working as a farm laborer. Between 1870 and 1880, he moved west with his father Moses Auringer, and other relatives to settled on a farm at Jamestown, Saratoga township, Howard County, Iowa.
He married Maria Jane Torney on Feb 22, 1880 at Riceville, Mitchell, IA. They can be found in the 1880, 1885, 1895, 1900 and 1905 censuses at Jamestown, Howard, Iowa; sometimes living with his father Moses and siblings; later farming with his wife and family. Maria and the children continued to farm until the early 1920's when Maria is found in the 1925 census living in Osage, Mitchell, Iowa with her two youngest daughters.
