Helena Augusta Bertha Dorothea John [ or Yahn** ]was born in Pommerania, Germany on February 3, 1862. At the age of eight years the family moved to Racine County, Wisconsin where they lived for four years, them coming to Howard County, Iowa.

In 1880 she was united in marriage to Joseph M. Reckner. To this union were born 11 children, eight sons and three daughters, one son, William dying in infancy. The family llived on the same farm south of Riceville for 34 years, until Mr. reckner's death in 1914. Since then she has made her home with her children.

On September 30, 1927 she took to her bed from which she was never again to rise. After seventeen long weeks of suffering the pain of cancer, God finally called her home on January 29, 1928. Her earthly days numbered 65 years, 11 months and 26 days. She leaves to mourn her departure, seven sons and three daughters, Charles, August and Benjamin of Charles City, Iowa; Joseph, Herman and Arthur of Acme, Iowa; Frank of Riceville; Mrs. A. J. Dilly of Acme; Mrs. W A. Ripley of Chester; and Mrs. E. G. Ring of Riceville; and ten grandchildren.

She was baptized in the Lutheran faith later renewing her vows by confirmation and remained a true and faithful member of her church until the end.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, January 31, 1928, from the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Dilly, where she had made her home for the past year. Services were conducted from the Lutheran Church south of Riceville, with her pastor, Rev. Leckband, officiating. Six of her sons acted as pallbearers.
