March 16, 1904Mrs. Sophia B. Tucker was born in Randolph, Vt., July 26th, 1820, and peacefully passed to rest at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. I. Sweeney of Osage, Iowa, March 8th. 1904.
While a child she was left an orphan and lived for a time with her grandparents and later with an uncle for whose large family she bore many of the burdens. She labored earnestly to secure an education and began earning her way by teaching when only 14 years old. Her experiences in youth were with the sterner side of life.
On December 1st, 1848, in Randolph Vermont, she was married to Rev. Cyrus Tracy Tucker. They went at once to their new home in Marshfield, Mass., where she bravely took up the duties of a minister's wife. Some seven years were spent in the east, when they removed to the west, Mr. Tucker accepting and filling pastorates successfully at Ripon, McGregor, Charles City, Mt. Carroll, Mason City, Anamosa, and Clarinda.
Other engagements were as financial secretary of Wayland Acadamy and Des Moines college. Before removing to the west Mrs. Tucker's health failed and was never regained.
Three children came to their home, Sophia A., Weston and Lucy E., only the first, Mrs. J. L. Sweeney now living.
In 1889, Mr. and Mrs. Tucker went to Minneapolis where they resided until May 1893, when they came to Osage where Mr. Tucker died within a few days and where Mrs. Tucker made her home until the time of her death, after two days sickness with pneumonia.
She was always a devoted wife and mother and an earnest christian worker, deeming the duties of her life paramount to all else.
She seemed quietly sleeping as she lay in her casket, covered with the beautiful flowers she loved so well, tributes from loving friends.
